As if the homeless population of LA doesn’t have enough to worry about, lately members of this group have been disappearing. But it’s when one turns up dead, that LAPD Detective Harri Harper is sent into action. She wastes no time in going hard at finding a solution. With no leads and no clues as to why the victim was found missing both bones and skin, she’s overjoyed when she tracks down a possible witness to the killing. Too bad too sad when he also turns up dead. But imagine her surprise when Jared, the purported vagrant, turns out to be an undercover detective … one who was working on a case of his own. It’s one that leads to a black market specializing in … the selling of skin.
Yes! I kid you not. There seems to be a black market devoted to the selling of skin … a very lucrative one I might add hence the title of THE SKIN HUNTERS by author Dominika Best. Who knew? It’s just one of the really gruesome bits of information that come out in this nerve-racking case that will have you on edge of your seat until the bitter end. It’s my first time reading this author, and she turns up the heat in this entry in the Harriet Harper Thriller series.
The story is extremely well-written with characters that you’d like to hug … and some that you’d like to shake. And there’s a story-in-a-story as two people independently try to solve the case of the murdered undercover detective. There’s Harri Harper, the LAPD homicide detective mentioned earlier, but there’s also a girl nicknamed “Whitey.” She’s a member of the homeless camp living near the river. She also was a friend of Jared … a friend who would love nothing more than seeing the killer pay for his crime. The two investigations crossover and are conducted in tandem. Each investigator relating the details from their own viewpoint in separate chapters achieves its goal in enlivening the tale and shooting the interest level to the max. One big reason is because these very different detectives have access to entirely different worlds and types of people. This gives depth to the mystery and allows glimpses into the shadowy nooks and corners of society.
Five stars to THE SKIN HUNTERS for keeping the tension high and the clues leading in all sorts of directions just to confuse the reader a’coming! If you’re a mystery-lover like I am, this is one you’re gonna want to read ... especially if you want to ring in the New Year with plenty of thrills! Lots of info and action as Harri does her best to shut any more murders down and do right by a fellow officer who was only trying to do his job and keep citizens safe. And a big PS: now that we’re aware there is such a thing as ‘skin harvesting,’ be sure to keep a watch out for yours! You’re welcome!
