AN INFAMOUS CULT … A GIRL’S MIND TWISTED … A DISTURBING SUSPENSE THRILLER THAT HIDES A SECRET
Being sixteen was hard. Just ask Lucy Gordon. While she’d gotten through childhood in one piece, she wasn’t quite sure what came next. Gossip about a cult piqued her interest. Intrigued by the bits and pieces of what sounded like a new way of life, she went in search of the group hidden in the heat of the California desert. Unfortunately, it was her bad luck to find them. The members were instantly forgettable; it was the cult leader that captured her interest. The effect of a shaman wrapped in mysticism was intoxicating, but not for long. The stimulants wore thin, and that was why she went on a mission to find what was missing in the equation. Soon insurrection turned to death, but was it murder? Twenty years later, that question still lingered and demanded an answer that only she could provide, but the real question was: would she?
The above is the foundation for PAPER CUT by author Rachel Taff. A story told in two timelines that drift between past and present, a truth is grooved out in lasting memories … some of which Gordon is reluctant to unveil. But a filmmaker changes everything by making a documentary of the murky events. The filming sets a new playing field in motion … one that gives a blow-by-blow account that may counter what Gordon has been alleging all these years. The result is a slow-burn read that keeps you guessing.
In the debut novel of Rachel Taff, she does a great job of engaging the reader and holding us captive as we try to solve the mystery and discern the truth. Add in family disputes and stalkers that won’t take no for an answer, and you’ve got your hands full of emotional shockers. Well-written and edited, what’s left is pure entertainment for those who enjoy psychological excursions into unknown. The pace lingers in all the right places and allows enough room for us to mull over clues left for page-hungry readers to interpret.
If you’re into spending a few hours of pleasurable entertainment laced with puzzling clues as to how someone gets their life back on track, PAPER CUT may be the book for you. Plenty to explore, it’s an in-depth examination of what happens when life takes control and people lose their hold on the wheel. Thank you, William Morrow and NetGalley, for providing me an ARC copy. I totally recommend and am giving it four stars.
